President-elect Donald Trump wasted no time laying down his immigration policy blueprint by appointing former ICE director Thomas Homan as the next “border czar.” This move, announced on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, is as clear a signal as any that Trump intends to reestablish the strict border policies that defined his first term. And if there’s anyone who can make good on Trump’s promises to get control of the border, it’s Tom Homan.

Homan is hardly a stranger to immigration enforcement. Known for his no-nonsense approach, Homan is a seasoned veteran when it comes to handling border security and deportations. Trump hailed Homan as the man for the job, promising that he’d oversee not just the southern border with Mexico but also the northern border and maritime and aviation security. Trump described him as someone “better at policing and controlling our Borders” than anyone else, adding that Homan will be in charge of deporting illegal immigrants “back to their Country of Origin.”

This appointment is a big shift from the so-called “border czar” role under the Biden administration, held by Vice President Kamala Harris, who mostly sidestepped actual border enforcement. Under Biden, the numbers tell a stark story: nearly 3 million illegal border crossings were recorded in fiscal year 2024 alone, and the total number of illegal encounters since FY 2021 has climbed past 10.8 million. To Trump supporters and border security advocates, those numbers are the inevitable outcome of weak policies and empty promises. With Homan in charge, Trump’s team is making it clear that the days of ignoring border chaos are over.

Homan himself seems ready to hit the ground running, calling deportations a “humane operation” in an interview with Fox News. He pointed out that the dedicated men and women of ICE know their jobs well and are capable of running a well-organized operation that focuses on getting people who don’t belong here back to their home countries. To him, this is not about creating turmoil but about restoring order. Under Homan’s leadership, ICE will focus on both public safety and national security, aiming to reduce the influx of drugs, gangs, and human trafficking that Trump has frequently denounced.

And Trump is leaning into this narrative hard. At his rallies, he painted a vivid picture of the border crisis, saying the U.S. has become a dumping ground for people that other countries are only too eager to get rid of. Trump has gone as far as to say these arrivals include “rough people” released from jails, prisons, and mental institutions. It’s no surprise, then, that he’s placing a tough hand at the helm of his immigration policy.

The border czar role is just the start of Trump’s staffing overhaul as he steps into his second presidency. Alongside Homan, Trump has tapped Susie Wiles, his former co-campaign manager, as the new White House chief of staff. Wiles, known for her sharp political instincts and loyalty to Trump, is expected to play a key role in driving Trump’s agenda forward, including his immigration reforms.

Homan’s appointment underscores Trump’s promise to reestablish control over America’s borders and bring a sense of security back to U.S. communities. For supporters, this is the return to hard-line border policies that they’ve been waiting for, and Homan’s experience makes him a force to be reckoned with. Whether it’s reducing the staggering number of illegal crossings or tackling the smuggling operations that have thrived under lax policies, Trump and Homan seem determined to show that border security is back on the priority list, with action that speaks louder than words.
