The Runoff Result

Former state Sen. Mike Mazzei has won the Republican nomination for governor in Oklahoma. He defeated state Attorney General Gentner Drummond in a tight race. According to NBC News, the margin was razor-thin. Mazzei won by about 2,000 votes in the GOP primary runoff.

The numbers tell the story of a close fight. Per the Washington Examiner, Mazzei took 50.3% of the vote. Drummond finished with 49.7%. This win caps a long primary battle. In the initial June primary, Drummond had finished first by just over 1,000 votes. That set up this intense second round.

Money and Endorsements

Finances played a huge role in the final stretch. Drummond’s campaign reported bringing in $2.3 million between the June primary and Tuesday’s runoff. Mazzei raised $816,000 in that same window. But Mazzei also put his own money on the line. He loaned his campaign $11 million. Drummond loaned his campaign $3 million.

President Donald Trump backed Mazzei early. Trump first endorsed him in May to succeed term-limited Gov. Kevin Stitt. The President called Mazzei a “MAGA warrior” on Fox News Politics. Trump’s support included sharp attacks on Drummond.

The Clash Over Values

The race turned on who represents Oklahoma best. Drummond faced heavy pressure from the President. This feud extended to local issues. Governor Stitt described Drummond as a “longtime political enemy” in a quote to local outlets.

Stitt’s support for Mazzei was decisive. “We want a pro-business governor in there to take the lead for the next four years,” the Governor declared. Stitt’s rift with Drummond centers on pollution lawsuits against poultry companies. Drummond had attacked these companies for phosphorus pollution in water supplies. Mazzei campaigned on cutting regulations for small businesses and eliminating income tax.

Drummond tried to push back on the President’s trade stance. He secured endorsements from Trump, the Oklahoma GOP, and Stitt. Trump even highlighted a new aluminum plant Drummond opposed.

A Clear Path Forward

Mazzei now moves to the general election. He joins Rep. Byron Donalds as a Trump-backed winner in this midterm season. The result shows the power of the President’s backing in a deep-red state. Mazzei is a former state senator and financial planner. His campaign focused on family values and economic growth.
