The Department of Justice has charged 48 foreign nationals with breaking the law in American elections. This is not a small mistake. These individuals allegedly registered to vote, cast ballots, or lied about their voting history. The charges cover events as recent as the 2024 presidential election. Some of these actions go back to 2017.

According to the Daily Wire, the accused live in red and blue states. They are found in California, Pennsylvania, New York, Nevada, and Florida. California alone holds more than half of these cases. Federal prosecutors say most of these people got their ballots by fraudulently registering first.

The Impact on Every Voter

Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter spoke clearly about the stakes. He stated that each unlawful ballot negates the ballot of a legal American citizen. He added that the new charges show exactly what that refusal to stop fraud puts at risk.

Specific cases show the pattern. Rony de Jesús Sicaja, a Guatemalan national, allegedly registered in 2017. He then voted in the 2022 primary and the 2024 general election. On the other side of the country, nine noncitizens in Pennsylvania were charged last Friday. Sigal Chattah, Nevada’s First Assistant U.S. Attorney, informed the press that casting a ballot in our elections while being a noncitizen constitutes a federal crime.

California’s Legal Battle

Tension has risen in California ahead of the November 3 elections. The federal government wants to stop mail-in ballots from people they believe are noncitizens. They asked the state to set aside 20,000 votes until citizenship is verified. Los Angeles County officials refused to look at a list provided on a password-protected thumb drive.

Bill Essayli, the top federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, warned that the election integrity is at risk. Following a Sunday court hearing, he informed the New York Post that their worry involves noncitizens actively voting in this election, with California confirming they will tally those votes. Such actions will undermine the integrity of the impending midterm election. He called it incredible that state officials said these votes should count while the federal government objects.

The three judges hearing the case seemed unsure if they had the power to force the ballots aside. They adjourned on Sunday afternoon without a ruling.

A Broader Crackdown

These charges are part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to clean up voter rolls. The Justice Department has filed lawsuits and sent letters to every county in California. They gave local officials 48 hours to help identify noncitizen voters. The department also sued the California Secretary of State and the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder on October 15.

One Cuban national, Alfredo Santiesteban, age 73, allegedly cast a ballot in the 2024 general election. Another man, Omar Alexander Muñoz, claimed to be a citizen when he registered in 2019. He then voted in 2020, twice in 2022, and again in 2024.
