Newsom Prays As Minaj Press Secretary Rumors Surge

California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a blunt four-word response to rumors that Nicki Minaj might become the White House Press Secretary. His office posted “We can only pray” after a White House director floated the rapper for the role. This moment highlights a deep divide between California leadership and the new Trump administration.

Stephen Cheung, the White House director of communications, shared on X, “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary.” He attached a video showing Minaj praising President Donald Trump’s work ethic. The singer attended a rally in Michigan where she declared she supports Trump “forever and ever.” Newsom’s office had previously sparred with the artist over her political views.

The Feud Over Swatting Incidents

Minaj has been critical of the California governor for months. She referred to him by the nickname “Newscum,” which Trump reportedly uses. In 2022 and 2023, the rapper stated she contacted Newsom about criminal swatting events targeting her Beverly Hills residence. She stated he ignored her calls despite her paying significant taxes.

Minaj stated to Time magazine, “He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes.” At a January 2026 event, she said of Newsom, “He does not want to do anything credible with his time or life.” This personal conflict makes the idea of her serving under his political opposite even more striking.

Why Michigan Matters Now

The timing of these rumors aligns with a tight Senate race in Michigan. Salena Zito, a columnist for the Washington Examiner, noted that the state election is “all about Detroit, and it’s all about the black vote.” Republican nominee Mike Rogers opened a campaign office in Detroit, a rare move for a GOP candidate.

President Trump brought Minaj to his rally to appeal to those same voters. Zito told Fox News that the event was “fun, it was playful, it was unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.” She argued this approach might work better than the strategy used by Democrat Abdul el Sayed, who brought former President Barack Obama to the campaign trail.

A Clash of Visions

Newsom’s short reply suggests he sees the potential appointment as a joke or a disaster. The White House has already signaled it wants to move the press corps to a “less obnoxious location.” On Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “I am not building a swimming pool in the White House Briefing Room, and never had any intention of doing so.” He insists he needs the space for other uses.

Placing a pop star with a history of clashing with the governor in such a high office would send a clear message. It signals a shift away from traditional political gatekeepers. The administration seems willing to embrace figures who generate excitement, even if they lack a political resume. This move tests the boundaries of what a Press Secretary actually does.

For now, the White House has not confirmed if Minaj will get the job. The question remains whether Trump values her popularity over traditional experience. If he hires her, the press briefings will never look the same again. The American public will watch to see if this bold experiment succeeds or fails.
