What Was Supposed to Happen
This week, President Trump hosts Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The plan was a lavish state visit with smiles and handshakes.
What actually happened is a room full of hard disputes. The two leaders will sit across a table crowded with fights. According to the Washington Times, disputes fill the negotiating table where the two leaders will meet behind the pageantry.
It is not just about trade deals or tariffs. The agenda includes people behind bars and wars far away.
Families Waiting for Answers
Family members of over a dozen Christians are praying for help. The Daily Caller reports that they desire Trump to bring up their cases with the head of the Communist regime.
One man, Gao Pu, is a Chinese Christian who came to the U.S. for school in 2007. He is now applying for asylum. Pastor Gao Quanfu and his wife, Pang Yu, are the parents he represents.
Fraud allegations are the reason the couple remains incarcerated in a Chinese prison. Gao Pu describes their treatment with deep anger. He stated, “The way they are treated is just, you know, inhumane and just brutal and they’re actually, like, animalistic.”
Supporters worry these cases will get lost in the big talk. Per The Daily Caller, everyday normal families question whether high-level summits like this can produce outcomes for their lives, such as life-changing outcomes for them.
Russia, Iran, and Taiwan
According to the New York Post, the meeting also addresses how China aids U.S. enemies, noting Beijing has helped Tehran kill Americans and sent Moscow crucial help to prolong a war President Donald Trump wants ended now.
Trump will be able to strike China hard with new sanctions powers if it continues backing Russia. Xi recognizes his economy sits on dangerously dicey ground as growth stalls far below any healthy level.
Europeans are getting sick of seeing China’s surplus production dumped on them. Xi might request what appear to be empty concessions from Trump, such as once again demanding Taiwan’s status quo remain.
Beijing has been steadily encroaching on the free island’s turf under the current status quo. Jimmy Lai is the world’s No. 1 political prisoner. Trump in late 2024 said that winning Lai’s release would be “easy”.
Trump has the tools to make things happen. He has new ways to punish bad behavior. Xi knows the U.S. holds the cards right now.
But the risk is high if the talks go south. Per the New York Post, if Xi balks, he is not the rational negotiator our president thought he was.
