New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced a recent development in the ongoing investigation into his 2021 mayoral campaign, as FBI agents approached him earlier this week, confiscating his cell phones and iPad. The federal investigators are delving into allegations that Adams’ campaign may have conspired with the Turkish government, sparking heightened scrutiny around the mayor.
According to reports, FBI agents intercepted Adams while he was walking on the street, seizing two cell phones and an iPad. Subsequently, the devices were returned, leaving some uncertainty regarding the connection between the FBI’s actions and the broader corruption investigation.
In response to the incident, Adams’ campaign attorney, Boyd Johnson, stressed that the improper action was promptly reported to investigators upon discovering the federal investigation. Johnson emphasized Adams’ commitment to transparency and cooperation, asserting that the mayor has not faced any accusations of wrongdoing and remains fully cooperative with the ongoing investigation.
The FBI initiated the probe last week, examining potential illegal donations from the Turkish government during Adams’ 2021 mayoral race. Campaign records indicate that Adams’ campaign received $6,000 from donors linked to a foundation supported by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son. The investigation took a significant turn with the FBI raiding the home of Brianna Suggs, one of Adams’ top fundraisers, seeking evidence of collusion between the campaign and a Brooklyn construction company associated with the Turkish government.
The warrant for the search of Suggs’ home included a request for evidence related to donations from Bay Atlantic University, a D.C. college founded by a Turkish individual. Agents confiscated multiple iPhones, laptops, and documents, including a folder labeled “Eric Adams.” Notably, the raid occurred while Adams was out of the city.
Adams, a former law enforcement officer, responded to the developments, expressing his expectation that all members of his staff follow the law and fully cooperate with investigations. He reiterated his commitment to transparency, asserting that he has nothing to hide. Throughout the investigation, Adams has been an outspoken critic of the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis, continually calling for more decisive action to address the influx of illegal immigrants in New York City.
