Jesus seems to be getting a lot of attention these days in the media. There was the controversial Super Bowl advertisement, and then nationwide news picked up the story of a “revival” at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, and now a new movie has dropped in theaters nationwide called “Jesus Revolution.”

One of the directors of the new movie, Jon Erwin, believes that the timing of all this is serendipitous. He spoke about the movie opening on the heels of one of the largest Christian revivals in recent years which saw an estimated 50,000 Gen Z’ers participate in song and prayer over a multi-week period to “The Christian Post.”

Jon Erwin, who co-directed the movie with Brent McCorkle, said this to the press, “For years, we’ve been working on this story. We almost got it made, and then COVID got it shut down. I just think there’s a divine hand on the timing of the film. And the reason we made it was … the thing that we’ve said for years is, if it happened then, it can happen now. If it happened once, it can happen again.”

The movie, starring Kelsey Grammer, tells the true story of pastor Chuck Smith (Grammer) who welcomed hippies into his traditional congregation at the height of the Jesus movement in California during the 70s. The Lionsgate movie held a special screening on Ash Wednesday and then opened nationwide on Friday, February 24.

Erwin said that he traveled to Asbury University to witness the new revival firsthand.

“It felt just like the scenes of the movie, like it felt identical, just the emotion of it, which was why we made the movie. I just want it to feel awakening, a little bit; renewal, a little bit. And you felt it in that room.”

Breitbart News reported on the Asbury Revival because it developed into a viral phenomenon on social media. That caused young people from all over the country, as well as other countries, to travel to Kentucky to experience the movement.

Below is a clip of Kelsey Grammer talking about the new movie on “Live with Kelly and Ryan.”
