What Happened in Vienna

Just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Vienna, Georgia, a homecoming celebration became deadly. Shots were fired during a block party that drew a massive crowd. Two young men lost their lives, while thirty-five others suffered injuries. The New York Post reported that “over 1,000 people” were gathered near Pine Street when the violence started. Authorities said the shooter opened fire around 1:25 a.m.

Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy confirmed that police were already on the scene monitoring the crowd. The gunfire came from at least two different spots about a block apart. The Dooly County Coroner, Brett Walls, identified the two victims as men, ages 20 and 23. Their families have been notified, but the names were not released to the public immediately.

The Immediate Aftermath

First responders rushed to the area as chaos unfolded. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued a press release detailing the scene. “Deputies immediately responded to the area and discovered multiple people had been shot,” the GBI stated. Two individuals found in the 600 block of Pine Street were pronounced deceased on scene, deputies also found. Treatment was administered at several regional hospitals for the victims.

The local community faced a long night of waiting for news on the wounded. WALB identified the deceased as JaQuevion Jackson and Macaleb Jackson. The news outlet also noted that 26 patients injured in the shooting remained at Crisp Regional [Hospital] as of 2 p.m. Sunday. Many families spent the night keeping watch over their loved ones in hospital beds.

Rep. Sanford Bishop spoke out about the tragedy, offering words of comfort to the grieving families. He stated that homecoming is meant to involve returning home—to family, to old friends, and to the neighborhoods that raised us. He noted that the celebration became a scene of unspeakable grief very quickly.

Bishop added that he and his wife Vivian join the people of Vienna and Dooly County in mourning. “I am grateful to the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, first responders, and the doctors and nurses working through the night,” he said. The GBI announced it would investigate the shooting alongside local authorities. As of Sunday, the motive and the identity of the shooter remain unclear.
