New York taxpayers will now see nearly half a million dollars directed toward expanding abortion access in New York City.
According to a news release from Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul, the New York State Department of Health and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will provide $495,000 to support the New York City Abortion Access Hub’s referral network. The stated purpose of the funding is to help more people obtain abortions in the city.
The hub’s website says it offers “confidential help finding an abortion provider in New York City, scheduling an appointment, getting financial assistance, and finding transportation and lodging.”
The service is not limited to New York City residents.
“This help is available regardless of age or immigration status. You do not need to live in New York City to contact the Abortion Access Hub or receive a referral,” the website states.
The site explains that callers are connected with a staff member who asks basic questions, including how far along the pregnancy is, what kind of abortion service the caller is seeking, which borough they prefer, and when they want the procedure.
Callers are also asked whether they have health insurance and whether they need help paying for the abortion, arranging transportation or finding lodging. The hub can also schedule appointments, and interpretation services are available.
In practice, the program helps connect people with abortion providers and assists with the financial and logistical barriers that might otherwise stand in the way.
The announcement came Wednesday, on the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and returned abortion policy to the states.
Hochul used the anniversary to criticize Republicans and reaffirm New York’s support for abortion access.
“As we commemorate four years since the Supreme Court’s disastrous Dobbs decision, New York is sending a clear message to the rest of the country: We’re not going to let Washington Republicans take us backwards,” she said.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also backed the expansion.
“Four years ago, the disastrous Dobbs decision stripped away a fundamental right and put reproductive health care out of reach for millions of Americans across this country. Since then, New York has led the fight to protect abortion care,” Mamdani said.
“On this anniversary, we are expanding the successful Abortion Access Hub so that anyone seeking care can more easily find it.”
According to releases from Hochul and Mamdani, the hub has handled more than 10,000 calls and 5,000 live chats. Most of the women who contacted it were under 30. About half were Latino, one-fourth were black, and more than half reported household incomes below $25,000 a year.
The releases also said the program will receive an annual investment of $220,000.
For pro-life New Yorkers, the funding is another reminder that their tax dollars are being used to support something they believe is morally wrong. That includes many Christians in the state who view unborn life as sacred.
A Pew Research survey has found that 57 percent of New Yorkers identify as Christian, with Roman Catholics making up the largest share.
For those who believe life begins in the womb, this is not simply a debate over health care or access. It is a question of whether the government should use public money to help end unborn lives.
Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Those who support abortion access call this funding a protection of reproductive rights. Those who oppose abortion see it as something far darker: a state-backed effort to make the taking of unborn life easier, cheaper and more available.
That moral divide is not going away. And with this new funding, New York has made clear which side its government has chosen.
