The White House has asked Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign. This news broke on Tuesday during the first press briefing of new Press Secretary Katie Zacharia. Zacharia told reporters, “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign.” She added that the ambassador proved a fantastic asset to the team and that we send her our best wishes. The decision follows a week of escalating reports about her conduct.
According to RedState, President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are said to be “extremely pissed off” over the claims. One major allegation involves a $100,000 American Express bill. Fox News reports that Guilfoyle allegedly asked Trump donor Eric Deters to pay this personal debt. The report claims she offered help with tax and legal matters in return. Deters stated he never made the payment.
The Official Denial
Guilfoyle has pushed back hard against these accusations. Through her lawyers, she denied any wrongdoing. Her team claims the money request was for services she provided before her Senate confirmation. They say it was for public appearances and speaking engagements. Her attorneys, David Schwartz and Jesse Binnall, also addressed her travel. This covers her trips on private planes to Davos, Switzerland.
Senate Eyes an Investigation
Political pressure is mounting on Capitol Hill. Fox News notes that a top Senate Republican believes an inquiry is coming. He expects the State Department to lead the probe. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will also look into the matter.
The State Department’s Office of Inspector General has already opened a separate probe. The Daily Mail reported this watchdog is looking into her lifestyle in Greece. Reports mention alleged mistreatment of staff and close ties to a Greek construction firm. Secretary Rubio dismissed the news reports as not being gospel truth.
The situation remains tense as the investigation begins. Last year, the Senate confirmed Guilfoyle for the post in Athens. She was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., though the two split in 2024. The allegations also include claims she threatened Greek officials. Some reports indicate she told guests that the U.S. might undermine Greece if it chose to do so. RedState noted she was seen warmly greeting Rubio on arrival but stayed on the sidelines at his departure.
