The Biden administration recently received pushback from a Texas judge‘s ruling to halt the Food and Drug Administration‘s (FDA) approval of the abortion pill mifepristone. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk argued that the FDA failed to evaluate the psychological and long–term medical effects of the abortion pill, which the FDA had previously stated were safe and effective.
In response to the ruling, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio–Cortez (R–NY) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D–OR) have both called on President Biden and the FDA to ignore the ruling. Ocasio–Cortez referred to the ruling as a “power grab” and stated that it is “up to the Biden administration to enforce, to choose whether or not to enforce a ruling.” Wyden proclaimed that the ruling had “no basis in law” and that it is “rooted in conservatives‘ dangerous and undemocratic takeover of our country‘s institutions.”

This reaction from the left is concerning, as it implies that the Biden administration can ignore court rulings that they do not agree with. This is a dangerous precedent to set for our government and our democracy, and it shows the left’s lack of respect for our legal institutions.
The FDA’s approval of mifepristone is ill–advised, as there have not been sufficient studies to determine the long–term health effects on women who take the pill. The FDA’s approval also fails to take into account the psychological and emotional effects of abortion on women. The Biden administration should not be allowed to ignore the judge’s ruling. This would be a direct violation of the separation of powers and would set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.
