Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent turned the tables on Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., during a tense Senate budget hearing Wednesday, bringing up the senator’s son and his past communications with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after Wyden accused the Trump administration of engaging in “corrupt” behavior.

The exchange quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the hearing as lawmakers sparred over fiscal policy and government oversight. While Wyden pressed Bessent over actions taken by the Trump administration, the Treasury secretary responded by raising questions about Adam Wyden, the senator’s son, and his previous interactions with Epstein.

“We would like to hear what Adam Wyden and Jeffrey Epstein talked about,” Bessent said during the hearing.

He continued by referencing emails that surfaced in documents released by the Department of Justice, adding, “Did your son and Jeffrey Epstein talk about pole dancing as he begged him for money?”

Wyden did not respond directly to the remarks during the exchange.

The confrontation highlights the continuing political sensitivity surrounding anyone whose name has appeared in connection with Epstein, the wealthy financier who died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Although many individuals named in documents connected to Epstein have not been accused of wrongdoing, even limited associations have often generated public scrutiny and political controversy.

Last year, the Justice Department released additional records related to Epstein, revealing communications and connections involving a wide range of business leaders, politicians, academics and other public figures.

Among the documents were emails showing that Adam Wyden had contacted Epstein in 2016 while seeking support for a business venture.

In one email, Adam Wyden thanked Epstein for meeting with him and expressed hope that his enthusiasm for the project had been evident.

“Jeffrey, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to meet with me. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and hope my passion and dedication for my business came through in the meeting,” the email stated.

The younger Wyden also wrote that he would welcome Epstein’s participation in the investment fund he was promoting.

The communications occurred years after Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution. The documents do not indicate whether Epstein invested in the venture, and details about the business proposal remain unclear.

Bessent also referenced Adam Wyden’s investment history during the hearing, claiming that one of his largest investment positions involved Rick’s Cabaret, a chain of adult entertainment clubs.

“Your son’s largest investment position was Rick’s Cabaret,” Bessent said.

The remarks came as Democrats have increasingly sought to spotlight connections between individuals in Trump’s orbit and Epstein. Wyden has been among the administration’s vocal critics on the issue, frequently questioning whether additional information related to Epstein should be made public.

Wednesday’s exchange demonstrated how the Epstein controversy continues to reverberate through Washington years after the financier’s death. As lawmakers continue debating the release of additional records and the extent of Epstein’s network, the issue remains a potent political weapon for both parties.

For much of the hearing, attention shifted away from budget matters and toward the personal accusations exchanged between Bessent and Wyden, underscoring how discussions surrounding Epstein continue to surface in unexpected corners of American politics.
