It’s always refreshing when politics takes a break from the doom and gloom for a little humor, and leave it to President Donald Trump to provide exactly that. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin visited the White House on Wednesday, and while the meeting was about diplomacy, trade, and international cooperation, the real highlights? A few laugh-out-loud moments that only Trump could deliver.
First, we got an absolute gem of a question from Brian Glenn of Real America’s Voice, who took it upon himself to ask the Irish leader why, of all things, he allowed Rosie O’Donnell to move to Ireland. Now, Ireland is known for its cheerful, fun-loving people, and Glenn couldn’t help but point out that adding O’Donnell to the mix might, let’s say, alter the vibe. “Why in the world would you let Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland?” Glenn asked, warning that she might “lower your happiness level.”
Martin’s reaction? Pure confusion. It was pretty clear he had no idea O’Donnell had moved to his country—and maybe not even who she was. Enter Trump, ever the showman, to make sure the moment didn’t go to waste. “Thank you, I like that question,” he quipped, clearly entertained. Then, turning to Martin, he asked, “Did you know you have Rosie O’Donnell? Do you know who she is?” Before the Irish PM could even process what was happening, Trump delivered the punchline: “You’re better off not knowing.”
Classic Trump. The kind of humor that reminds people why they liked him in the first place—quick, unfiltered, and completely willing to say what half the country is thinking.
But the comedy routine wasn’t over just yet. Earlier in the day, Vice President JD Vance had joked that Trump was a “very big fan of conservative dress” and warned Martin that if Trump noticed his socks, he’d probably have something to say. Turns out, Vance was right.

Once they were all seated in the White House, Trump’s attention was immediately drawn to Vance’s shamrock-covered socks. In true Trump fashion, he just couldn’t ignore them. “I’m trying to stay focused,” he said, “but I’m very impressed with the VP’s socks.”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what a genuine, natural working relationship looks like. No staged interactions, no forced camaraderie—just a president and vice president who genuinely get along and can poke fun at each other without it turning into an existential crisis. Compare that to the Biden-Harris duo, where Kamala spent half the term trying to pretend she wasn’t being sidelined, and Joe spent the other half forgetting what he was supposed to say.
Meanwhile, Vance is quickly building a reputation as a VP with personality. Between rolling with the memes and now his sock moment, he’s proving to be one of the most down-to-earth, relatable vice presidents in recent history. It’s a refreshing change from the robotic, pre-scripted political figures we’ve been subjected to for years.
While the Trump administration is tackling enormous challenges—undoing Biden’s economic disaster, securing the border, restoring energy independence—they’re also proving that leadership doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. They’re serious about fixing the country, but they’re also not afraid to have a little fun while doing it. And really, isn’t that part of what made Trump so popular in the first place? He actually enjoys the job—and, let’s be honest, watching him call out Rosie O’Donnell one more time never gets old.
