Rep. Delia Ramirez introduced a bill to abolish the Department of Homeland Security on Monday. This move comes right after federal agents raided the Washington, D.C. home of Rep. Ilhan Omar. The raid was part of a criminal investigation into Omar’s immigration paperwork.

According to the New York Post, Ramirez wants to stop all immigration detentions in the United States. Her proposal, called the “Reimagining Safety Act,” would replace DHS with a new agency focused on community safety. She claims the current system targets families and political opponents. “Just this week, our communities were reminded that DHS is a weapon,” Ramirez told the Intercept in a statement.

The Raid and the Investigation

Agents from Homeland Security Investigations executed a search warrant at Omar’s residence. Border czar Tom Homan confirmed to Fox News that a federal judge signed the warrant. He stated the probe involves a years-long look at Omar’s immigration history. Omar has denied any wrongdoing and calls the raid a political attack.

Rep. Ted Lieu called the action an “outrageous abuse of power by ICE.” He noted that Omar is a U.S. citizen for 26 years. Sen. Bernie Sanders echoed this view on social media. “Trump is weaponizing the federal government to silence opposition,” Sanders said in a post to X. Democrats argue this is an effort to bully political foes.

However, Republicans say the public has not seen Omar’s naturalization records. Rep. Nancy Mace tried to subpoena the files but was blocked by the Oversight committee. She said she wanted to see the documents for herself. The Justice Department confirmed the search warrant was court-authorized. Two sources close to the case say it stems from fraud allegations about her father’s paperwork.

What the Bill Would Change

Under Ramirez’s plan, the Justice Department would take over immigration enforcement. The Treasury Department would handle customs duties instead. The Coast Guard would move to the Department of Transportation. The bill also limits the Secretary of State’s power to label foreign groups as terrorists.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal supports the move to end the agency. She described the raid as a personal attack on the Somali American population. “This is his way of bullying his way back into power,” Jayapal said. She referenced Trump’s focus on fraud rings in Minnesota earlier this year. The Democratic push to end ICE has grown during the 2026 midterm election cycle.

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin defended the agency’s actions regarding the shooting in New York. He stated that DHS is not acting as a rogue entity. The agency was created after the 9/11 attacks to share intelligence better. Ramirez argues it has been used to persecute people the government dislikes. “It is clear that now is the time to reimagine our safety,” she said.

The bill faces a long road in Congress. No vote has been scheduled yet. The focus remains on the ongoing criminal investigation into Omar. Federal agents presented evidence to a court to get the warrant. The outcome of that probe will likely drive the next steps.
