Former Rep. Eric Swalwell is facing renewed scrutiny as multiple controversies converge, including sexual assault allegations, past political decisions, and his connections to figures tied to Hunter Biden.

At the center of the latest attention is Swalwell’s past support for Hunter Biden, particularly during a high-profile moment in December 2023 when Biden appeared outside the Capitol rather than complying with a congressional subpoena.

Swalwell was present at that press conference and had helped secure the location, an area often used for media events. At the time, he strongly pushed back against Republican-led investigations, arguing there was no evidence of wrongdoing by Hunter Biden or his father.

That episode has taken on new significance as details about campaign donations resurface. During Swalwell’s run for governor of California earlier this year, he received $29,900 from Kevin Morris, a Hollywood lawyer known for financially supporting Hunter Biden.

Morris has reportedly spent millions covering Biden’s legal expenses and personal costs, including housing, artwork purchases, and tax obligations. The two first connected in 2019 and maintained a close relationship as Biden dealt with legal and financial challenges.

Morris had also contributed to Swalwell’s congressional campaign in the past and was seen standing near him during the 2023 Capitol press conference. Their overlapping connections to Hunter Biden have drawn attention from critics, who argue the relationships raise broader questions about influence and political alignment.

There are also concerns tied to business dealings. Morris confirmed in 2024 that he still held a stake in a Chinese private equity firm that he acquired through a company previously owned by Hunter Biden. Separately, Swalwell has long dealt with criticism over his own past interactions involving an alleged Chinese intelligence operation targeting him early in his political career. That episode eventually contributed to his removal from the House Intelligence Committee.

Meanwhile, the allegations against Swalwell have begun to affect his political and financial support. One of his longtime donors, businessman Stephen Cloobeck, has publicly distanced himself. Cloobeck, who contributed tens of thousands of dollars to Swalwell’s campaigns over the years and provided additional gifts, indicated he no longer maintains a relationship with the former congressman. He also suggested the situation has influenced his broader political views.

Swalwell’s legal team has denied the allegations, calling them false and politically motivated. His attorney described the claims as a coordinated attempt to damage his reputation after decades in public service.
