The Plan and the Shift
Secretary Pete Hegseth brought in tech giants to lead the way. On Wednesday, Hegseth announced a new group called Project Meridian. He wants to find the weapons needed for tomorrow’s fights. Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey will co-direct this new panel.
The group includes former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. They will look at what comes next in war. They will not write new rules or strategies. They will find the domains that must be conquered. They will look at capabilities that must be mastered. This effort starts right now. The first meeting happened on Wednesday. It took place in a secure room just yards from the stage. Hegseth said the team has 120 days to work. The trajectory of wars, domains and technologies must be ruthlessly mapped by them.
Looking Outside the Walls
Hegseth spoke at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. He told the troops why he picked these outsiders. He said the best forecasters do not stay inside the Pentagon. “As we scan that horizon of an unknown future, we should have the humility to recognize that the best forecasters of future conflict do not solely reside inside the Pentagon,” Hegseth explained. He noted that asking the same people to ask and answer questions creates bias. “There are obvious biases and risks to asking ourselves to both ask the questions and answer them,” he said.
The scope is huge. The goal is to find what future troops will need. The group will focus on “discovering, developing and fielding” new systems. Their work will end with a public report and a secret annex. Fox News reported that Musk is taking on this new role in the Trump administration. He will help decide which weapons American troops need.
Who Is Leading the Charge
Musk brings real experience to the table. His company, SpaceX, already has contracts with the Pentagon. Luckey founded Anduril Industries, which also works with the military. Both men know how to build tech for war. They will lead the effort under Emil Michael, the Chief Technology Officer. Newt Gingrich joins them as a co-leader. This mix of tech and policy is new for the Defense Department.
Hegseth stressed that the group is “futuristic on purpose.” He believes the military should have started this work a decade ago. A decade back, consideration of the Autonomous Warfare Command was necessary. According to reports, “We need to be looking forward into the future” Another part of his plan is to create an Autonomous Warfare Command. This command will scale up autonomous tech fast. Musk and Luckey bring firsthand experience to the effort, as the New York Post observed.
The Final Countdown
The clock is ticking for the new panel. They have a strict deadline to finish their work. The findings will be shared with the world in an unclassified report. A classified part will stay hidden for officials. The plan is to identify future threats before they arrive. Hegseth wants the military to stay ahead of the competition. He wants to master new domains before enemies do. The team will meet in a sensitive compartmented information facility. This ensures their early work stays secure. The initiative is designed to change how America fights next.
