President Trump Makes Statement After SCOTUS Ruling

President Donald Trump said the SAVE America Act has become “even more important” after the Supreme Court ruled that states may count certain mail-in ballots received after Election Day without violating federal law.

Trump made the comments after signing a series of executive orders, when Townhall reporter Cameron Arcand asked him about the Court’s ruling and what it means for the future of the SAVE Act. Trump criticized the decision, calling it “detrimental to honest elections,” and argued that it “gives people more time to vote illegally.”

“Mr. President, what do you make of the Supreme Court ruling today, in regards to the mail-in ballots, and what comes next for the SAVE Act after today’s ruling?” Arcand asked.

Trump responded by tying the ruling directly to his push for the SAVE Act.

“Because of the mail-in ballot ruling — which was a little bit surprising, gives people more time to vote illegally — the SAVE Act is even more important,” Trump said. “You have to be a citizen of our country, okay, you have to show you’re a citizen of our country, called citizenship.”

Trump then repeated his support for photo voter identification and limits on mail-in voting, while saying there should still be exceptions for certain voters.

“Voter ID by photo, photo voter ID, and no mail-in ballots — unless you’re in the military, disabled, you’re ill, or you’re away even on a vacation, we’re being very open about it,” Trump said. “It’s pretty easy, and we’ll have honest elections.”

He added that many people had been watching for the Supreme Court’s decision, but said he believed the ruling would hurt election integrity.

“The ruling, which a lot of people were waiting for, that was a ruling that was — I think it was very detrimental to honest elections,” Trump continued. “But it is what it is.”

Breitbart News’s John Binder reported that the Supreme Court issued a 5-4 decision allowing states to count mail-in ballots that were sent on or before Election Day but received by election officials after Election Day.

According to Binder, Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the majority opinion. She was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson.

“Two principles are important here. First, post-election day receipt, considered on its own, does not conflict with the election-day statutes,” the Court wrote.

Trump’s remarks came just days after he said he was canceling a signing ceremony for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act. His latest comments suggest he plans to keep pressing lawmakers on the issue, especially after a Supreme Court decision he believes makes the legislation more urgent.
