A military judge has scheduled the trial of alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed for June 5, 2028. That date arrives nearly 27 years after the attacks killed nearly 3,000 people. The ruling comes as families face an agonizing wait for a verdict. The delay means victims’ families may never see justice in their lifetimes. John Ryan, a former Port Authority police chief, described the situation to Fox News. He called the ongoing legal struggle “an open sore” that gets worse with every anniversary.
The trial date remains tentative. Prosecutors were prevented by a recent court ruling from utilizing statements Mohammed gave to FBI agents. The judge found those statements were tainted by coercive treatment in U.S. custody. The government chose not to appeal this decision. They feared an appeal would risk the 2028 trial date. Since 2012, this represents the fifth military judge assigned to supervise the case.
Why the Theories Survive
While the legal battle drags on, false stories about the attacks keep growing. The Washington Examiner reported that these theories began almost as soon as the Twin Towers came down. New generations now stumble on web links or TikToks claiming to show the real story. Young users cite Osama bin Laden’s justifications for the attack as sources of enlightenment.
These warped narratives spread fast on social media. Videos casting bin Laden’s 2002 manifesto in a favorable light have exploded in popularity. This happens even after the 9/11 Commission released a massive report in 2004. That report included 585 pages of details based on over 1,200 interviews. Yet, an entire online community still claims jet fuel could not melt the steel. The internet was a “wild place” in 2001, allowing chaos to take root.
The Cost of Secrecy
Families feel the weight of time. The 100th floor of the North Tower claimed the life of a father. Passananti told Fox News that the case feels like a “twilight zone.” He finds it unbelievable that Americans must continue fighting for justice regarding the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Five defendants remain held at Guantánamo Bay without a trial. One defendant is being handled separately due to mental incompetence.
Government secrecy creates a powerful problem. The relationship between leaked documents and public trust has become a “powerful acid of institutional trust.” This secret activity comes at a high cost. “But this secret activity does come at an epistemic cost,” experts have noted.
