The ICC’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, specifically requested Clooney’s assistance in this matter. In a statement on her foundation’s website, Clooney stated that she “agreed to join the panel.” However, her involvement has sparked outrage among those who see this as a politically motivated decision.
The panel, which also includes former judges from criminal tribunals at The Hague, has determined that Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, and Ismail Haniyeh have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. They also concluded that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant are also guilty of these crimes.
Many on the right are calling foul and accusing Clooney and the panel of being biased against Israel. They argue that the ICC should not have jurisdiction over a conflict that is still ongoing and that the decision is an attack on the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
