President Donald Trump is unveiling plans for this massive facility in Iowa. The White House says it will bring 1,750 permanent jobs to the state. It also promises between 5,000 and 6,000 construction jobs during the first phase. This is not a small project. It is a game changer for the region.
The company behind it is Mesabi Metallics. They plan to use iron ore from their mine in Minnesota. The White House says the plant will produce 7.5 million tons of steel in its first phase. It could eventually reach 10 million tons per year. Fox News reports that this figure represents approximately one-tenth of the total U.S. steel production from last year.
Building a Domestic Supply Chain
Here is the thing: this creates a fully domestic supply chain. The ore comes from Minnesota. The steel gets made in Iowa. No foreign ships needed. The administration says this strengthens our national security and protects local communities.
Of course, big projects take time. Mesabi does not expect to produce the first steel until 2030. The path to this point was not easy. The project traces back nearly two decades. It faced financing problems and missed deadlines. Essar Steel Minnesota even filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2016. They later emerged as Mesabi Metallics.
Now, things are moving. A recent SEC filing says initial production is targeted for late 2026. That will be followed by a ramp-up to full commercial production. The White House highlights this as proof that their economic agenda works.
Restoring American Industry
This is where it changes. We have watched our factories close for decades. Now, we are seeing the opposite. Rebuilding American industry, reshoring manufacturing, and generating fresh employment are key ways Trump is fulfilling his pledge.
The Federalist notes that these efforts are historic. They support local communities and secure our supply chains. A government official remarked that the recent declaration highlights the President’s historic work to revitalize the U.S. steel industry, which supports local communities, strengthens supply chains, and protects our national security.
It is a direct response to years of decline. The administration has announced hundreds of billions in planned investments.
