On Monday night, California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was heckled by several members of the crowd during a speaking event with Paul Krugman. Pelosi, who boopted as speaker of the House after the 2022 midterms, was interrupted by multiple hecklers who criticized her for her role in several military engagements, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The most vocal heckler, a woman, yelled out “You know Pelosi, that’s a very good place for you in the depths of hell,” and accused her of lying about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and of pushing for the invasion of Afghanistan, which has left 90 percent of the population impoverished and dying. The heckler also accused Pelosi of destroying Nordstream, a natural gas pipeline running from Russia to Germany, and leaving millions of Germans without energy.

The woman was then removed, but the heckling didn‘t stop there. A male heckler took the spotlight and accused Pelosi of being a “war criminal,” and asked if she was looking for Ukraine when she went to Taiwan. “You goddam war criminal! How many people have died in your fucking name?” he yelled before being removed.

The Republican party has long been critical of Pelosi’s foreign policy and her decision to support military action in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have argued that the wars have cost American taxpayers trillions of dollars and have resulted in the deaths of thousands of service members. They have also accused Pelosi of exacerbating geopolitical tensions by pushing for the destruction of Nordstream.

The heckling of Pelosi on Monday night has sparked a renewed debate about the Democratic representative’s foreign policy record. While some applaud her for her willingness to pursue military action in the Middle East, others have argued that Pelosi should take responsibility for the consequences of her decisions. Regardless of where one stands on the issue, the heckling of Nancy Pelosi has highlighted the deep divisions in the United States over foreign policy.
