Oscars Drama: Will Smith ‘Slaps’ Chris Rock After Jada Joke

As the nation prepared once again for the Oscars, there appeared to be plenty of talk about whether or not the long running ceremony had any semblance of necessity in our modern world.

After all, this was the sort of show that puts the ultra-wealthy Hollywood elite in a room together to pat each other on the back, raise the profile of untenably expensive fashion designers, and generally look down at the rest of this pauper nation for the sake of having a party.

It’s a clout factory, essentially, and much of the nation has long tuned out.

But last night, in a moment that many appear to believe may have been scripted, Will Smith stood up from the audience and slapped host Chris Rock.

The Los Angeles Police Department says Chris Rock won’t be pressing charges against Will Smith after Smith clocked him at the Oscars on Sunday night. In a release, the LAPD noted that although the comedian declined to file a complaint against the Oscar-winning actor—who slapped Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from the hair-loss condition alopecia—”if the party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report,” reports the Los Angeles Times. Industry insiders insist the kerfuffle wasn’t staged, and sources tell Page Six that the two men “agreed to make amends later in the evening.” More fallout after the “slap heard around the world”:

The moment was soon bouncing around social media.  We must warn you that there is some strong language in the clip.

Real or staged?  You be the judge.
