Of all the ridiculous claims being made about Chicago’s horrific gun violence problem, the latest from Windy City Mayor Lori Lightfoot may just take the cake.
Lightfoot, a staunch liberal Democrat, inherited one heck of an issue when she took over mayoral duties in Chi-Town. You see, the city banned handguns all the way back in 1982, with that order sticking for well over three decades. That meant that, very simply, only criminals would be armed in Chicago.
Over the ensuing 30-or-so years, violent drug gangs virtually ransacked the city, turning Chicago into America’s Tijuana.
Now, Lightfoot is trying to blame the Second Amendment for these issues.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) contends the surge in shootings in Chicago is the result of states in the Union that have “virtually no gun control.”
She made this argument on CNN’s State of the Union over the weekend, reviving the Obama-era claims which blamed Indiana and other states for the crime in Chicago, Illinois.
The Hill published video of Lightfoot saying, “Our gun problem is related to the fact that we have too many illegal guns on our streets, 60 percent of which come from states outside of Illinois.”
She added, “We are being inundated with guns from states that have virtually no gun control, no background checks, no ban on assault weapons — that is hurting cities like Chicago.”
Lightfoot has failed to recognize a key distinction in her assessment, however, in that the guns Chicago has found itself inundated with are in the hands of criminals, not law-abiding citizens.
Simply put, the guns aren’t doing the damage here, but rather the users.
