On October 25, 2023, President Joe Biden held a press conference and publicly said that he doubted the casualty figures being reported by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
“I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed,” Biden said. “I’m sure innocents have been killed, and it’s a price of waging war.”
“I’m sorry. I’m disappointed in myself,” Biden told the group, according to the Washington Post.
The leaders demanded that Biden show the Palestinians more empathy and according to reports, Biden hugged one of the participants at the end of the meeting.
From the Washington Post:
Biden appeared to be affected by their account. “I’m sorry. I’m disappointed in myself,” he told the group, according to two people familiar with the meeting. “I will do better.” The meeting, scheduled for 30 minutes, ended up lasting more than an hour, according to one White House official, and ended with Biden hugging one of the participants.
Additionally, “20 distressed White House staffers” also met with Biden’s senior leadership who are upset with the Administration’s support of Israel.
The staffers were told that Biden is only giving lip service and “had to be careful not to criticize Israel in public so it could influence its leaders in private.”
Some of the sources cited by the Washington Post were anonymous and this all has the feel of the administration attempting to get radical protestors off their back.
It’s interesting that this report came out a few days after protesters interrupted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
